This presentation reviews a variety of financial crimes schemes perpetrated during the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak. This includes fraud and other scams against various business industries, anti-money laundering issues, and other corrupt practices. This session will bring awareness to these issues to help companies, their customers, and individuals best safeguard themselves from financial crime schemes seeking to exploit the conditions existing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Ryan Schwoebel Bio

Ryan Schwoebel is Co-Chair of the ACAMS Alabama chapter and Special Investigative Unit & AML Manager for Protective Life Insurance Corporation in Birmingham, AL. Prior to this, Ryan worked as an investigator and then AVP/team lead for Regions Bank AML/BSA. Before his transition to the private sector, Ryan worked as a special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service’s Norfolk Fraud Unit. Ryan received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Montevallo and a master’s degree from UAB. He is a Certified Anti-money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). He teaches as adjunct faculty for UAB and Troy University, volunteers with the AARP’s Fraud Watch Network, and is a member of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s Identity Theft & Economic Crimes Task Force.
